Crafty Grandparents Day DIY Gift Ideas

0-5 years old: Sweet Treat Thank You

This easy craft combines the love of a grandchild’s drawing with the sweet treat of candy.

What you’ll need:

  • Organza bag
  • Grandma or Grandpa’s favorite candy
  • Ribbon
  • 3×6 Piece of Paper
  • Crayons
  • Hole Punch

How to do it:

  1. Fill a small organza bag with grandma or grandpa’s favorite bulk candy. If you’re lucky enough to have several grandparents (or great grandparents) consider buying bulk candy to get more candy for your cash.
  2. Fold the paper in half to make a 3×3 card and punch a hole in one corner.
  3. Let your little one color or draw on the front of the card.
  4. Write “Grandma (or grandpa) makes life more sweet” or “It’s a treat to have a grandparent like you” inside the card.
  5. Tie the card to the organza bag and you’re done.

11-16 years old: Paint a Candy Dish

When I was a kid, my grandmother kept a candy dish in the living room. It was always full of sweet treats, free for the taking. Hers was clear glass, but imagine how special it would have been to have a candy dish hand painted by one of her grandchildren. I wish I had thought of it at the time.

What you’ll need:

  • White ceramic dish
  • Acrylic Craft Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Stencils or tape if desired
  • Newspaper or a drop cloth to protect your work area
  • Bulk Candy

How to make it:

  1. Get creative. Pick one or two colors and make a design on the dish. Tape is great for making straight lines, while stencils can help with more complex patterns. For design ideas, check out this post from MarthaStewart.com
  2. Make sure you only paint the outside of the dish so it stays food safe. Let dry.
  3. Fill with your grandparent’s favorite bulk candy.
