Snickers is a product of Mars, Inc., who we have to thank for many of our Mars Chocolate Favorites, including Twix, M&Ms, and Milky Way. Frank and Ethel Mars (not to be confused with I Love Lucy neighbors Fred and Ethel Merman) started the Mars candy factory in 1911 and their namesake company has been making delicious goodies ever since.

In addition to being candy inventors, Ethel and Frank raised racehorses on their farm in Tennessee. One of Ethel’s favorite horses was named Snickers, and she was delighted when she learned that the candy would be named after it.

Due its early association with racehorses, and also due to the filling combination of peanuts and chocolate Snickers, was marketed as a good choice for athletes. In fact, it was sold under the name Marathon for several years in the UK and Ireland.
