If you have ever seen Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory you know that if anyone can turn a frown upside down, “The Candy Man Can.” Candy is a staple of America. In fact, Americans love chocolate so much that they are said to have eaten 18% of the world’s chocolate candy by value in 2015. Candy is everywhere, and while chocolate is said to be the preference of the majority of adults, children tend to eat four times more gummy candies compared to adults.
This delectable childhood treat of gummy candy is irresistible to many, so we have gathered a few fun facts about this soft candy so you can know a little more about your favorite treat! Turns out- gummy candy is just as interesting as one may think!
1. This nostalgic candy made its first appearance in 1922 when the circus inspired a man named Hans Reigel to come up with the first gummy bear. He went on to be the founder of the well-known candy company, Haribo.
2. The Guinness Book of World Records quotes the largest gummy candy ever created to be 1,128 pounds. This massive creation was built in Germany in 2014
3. Gummy worms didn’t come about until about twenty years later, first produced by Trolli. They wanted something that grossed kids out in a way that kept them wanting more!
4. Gummy worms took the stage in America almost a year before gummy bears did, despite gummy bears being the standard gummy candy today.
5. While gummy candy may not be a superfood, compared to other candies they are relatively healthy, containing little fat and some protein from the gelatin…but you still have to factor in their high sugar content!
6. Today (and for a long time now) Haribo and Trolli are by far the most popular producers of gummy candy.
7. Dinsey made a widely popular show in the 1990s based on the gummy candy. “Adventures of the Gummi Bears” was one of the first animated series Disney put out after Mickey Mouse was decidedly too big to put on any regular tv show.
8. You may not be able to buy the biggest gummy candy ever made, but never fear because you can buy gummy bears online up to 26 pounds!
9. According to Haribo, if you took all the gummi bears they produced each year and lined them up head to toe, there would be enough to make it all the way around the world!
10. Swedish Fish are one of the few gummy candies that are vegan by nature, as they do not contain gelatin. Other gummy candies, such as Haribo Gummi Bears, usually produce an alternate vegan version.
